Facial Laser Hair Removal: Areas, Sessions, Cost and Skin Types

Facial laser hair removal can reduce hair on the upper lip, chin, sideburns, cheeks and jawline. See sessions, cost drivers, who it suits and when laser is not the best tool.
Facial LHR

Facial laser hair removal treats unwanted hair on the upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns, cheeks or full face in short sessions. Most people need several treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and the result is a long-term reduction in hair, not a guarantee that every hair is gone for good. How well it works depends mostly on your hair color, your skin tone and what is driving the hair growth.

The essentials

  • Areas: upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns, cheeks, between the brows and full face. Facial, chin, sideburn and neck laser hair removal are named services at all seven Esthetica Medspa locations.
  • Sessions: the American Academy of Dermatology says most patients need 2 to 6 treatments; the ASPS describes 4 to 10, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Facial hair, especially hormonal hair, often needs maintenance.
  • Best candidates: dark hair responds best. White, gray, blonde and many red hairs respond poorly to laser.
  • Darker skin: it can be done, but the laser and settings have to be chosen carefully for your skin type.
  • Hormones: laser reduces hair, it does not treat the cause. New or fast-growing facial hair in women is worth discussing with a doctor.

What is facial laser hair removal?

Facial laser hair removal uses concentrated light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy heats and damages the follicle so it produces less hair, and finer hair, over a course of treatments. It is fast on small areas: an upper lip or chin session usually takes only a few minutes of laser time.

The FDA term for what these devices can claim is permanent hair reduction, which it defines as a long-term, stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing, measured at 6, 9 and 12 months after a completed course. That is different from permanent hair removal. In practice, most patients see much less hair, softer regrowth and easier upkeep, and some need a touch-up session or two a year.

Which areas of the face can be treated?

Almost any area of the face below the eyebrows can be treated, except the skin right around the eyes. The most requested areas are the upper lip and chin, followed by the jawline, sideburns and cheeks. Each area behaves a little differently, which is why we plan by zone rather than treating “the face” as one block.

Area Who usually asks for it What to know
Upper lip Mostly women Small, quick area. Hair is often fine, so results depend on pigment. Sensitive, but sessions are short.
Chin Women with coarse or hormonal hair Often responds well to the coarse hairs, but hormonal regrowth is common. See our chin laser hair removal guide.
Sideburns Women, some men shaping a hairline Agree the line you want to keep before the first session.
Cheeks and jawline Women with peach fuzz or darker strands, men shaping a beard Very fine, light fuzz responds poorly to laser. Coarse dark strands respond better.
Full face Patients treating several zones Usually priced as a package; ask how it compares with paying per area.
Neck and beard line Men with razor bumps, women with nape hair Covered in our neck laser hair removal guide.

How many sessions does facial laser hair removal take?

Most people need several sessions, because the laser only affects hairs in their active growth phase at the time of treatment. The AAD says most patients need 2 to 6 laser treatments, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. The ASPS describes a typical course as 4 to 10 sessions, also 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Facial hair often lands at the higher end of those ranges, particularly on the chin and jawline, where hormones keep stimulating follicles. For a zone-by-zone breakdown, read our guide on how many laser hair removal sessions the face needs. The short version: plan for a series, then maintenance as needed.

Does facial laser hair removal work on all skin and hair types?

It works best on dark hair, because the laser targets pigment. It can be performed on darker skin, but the AAD says it must be done very carefully in these patients, which in practice means choosing the right laser wavelength and settings. It works poorly on white, gray and blonde hair, which have little pigment to absorb the light.

The Endocrine Society’s guideline on hirsutism reflects the same principle. It suggests laser or light-based hair removal for unwanted hair that is auburn, brown or black, and suggests electrolysis instead for white or blonde hair. If your facial hair is light, we will tell you honestly that laser is unlikely to be the best tool, and our electrolysis vs laser comparison explains the alternative.

For darker skin tones, the long-wavelength Nd:YAG laser is commonly used because it is less absorbed by the pigment in the skin’s surface. Our guide to laser hair removal for dark skin covers how settings are matched to skin type.

One caution we raise in consultation: the Endocrine Society guideline advises clinicians to warn Mediterranean and Middle Eastern women with facial hirsutism about an increased risk of paradoxical hypertrichosis, which is extra hair growth triggered by the treatment itself. For those patients it suggests considering topical treatment or electrolysis. It is uncommon, but you deserve to know about it before you start.

Can laser help hormonal facial hair or PCOS?

Laser can reduce hormonally driven facial hair, but it does not treat the hormone imbalance behind it. That is why chin and jawline hair linked to conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) tends to need more sessions and more maintenance. Many patients do best when laser is part of a plan that also involves their doctor.

If facial hair appears suddenly, grows quickly, or comes with other changes such as irregular periods, acne or a deepening voice, see a physician before or alongside laser treatment. The Endocrine Society recommends medical evaluation for hirsutism because it can signal an underlying condition. We are happy to work alongside your doctor’s plan.

How much does facial laser hair removal cost?

Facial laser hair removal is usually priced per area per session, or as a package for a full course. Small zones like the upper lip are among the least expensive areas to treat, while a full face costs more. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons puts the average cost of laser skin treatments at $697 for the procedure alone, and that figure covers a wide range of laser procedures, not just small facial areas.

Three things drive what you will pay:

  • Number of areas. Upper lip only costs less than upper lip, chin and sideburns together.
  • Number of sessions. Coarse, hormonal hair usually needs more treatments and maintenance.
  • Package vs single sessions. Packages generally lower the per-session price if you commit to a full course.

Our laser hair removal cost guide explains pricing models in more detail. We confirm the exact price for your areas at consultation.

Is facial laser hair removal different for men?

Yes, the goals are usually different. Men most often use laser to clean up the cheek line, define the beard edge, clear the neck, or reduce razor bumps from shaving, rather than to remove facial hair entirely. Agree the exact line you want to keep before your first session, because laser reduction is hard to reverse.

Coarse beard hair responds well to laser, but it is also dense, so expect a full series. Our guide to laser hair removal for men covers the most common areas.

Is at-home facial laser hair removal worth it?

At-home laser and IPL devices can reduce hair for some people, but they are generally designed with lower power for safety, which usually means slower and more modest results. They are also typically not suited to every skin tone or hair color, so read the device’s labeling carefully before using it on your face.

In a medical spa, a trained provider assesses your skin type, chooses the laser and settings, and adjusts them session by session. That matters most on the face, where skin is visible and sensitive and where pigment changes are more noticeable. If you have darker skin, hormonal hair or light hair, a professional consultation is the safer starting point.

What should I expect before and after a session?

Preparation is simple. The ASPS advises avoiding waxing or plucking for four to six weeks before treatment, because the laser needs the hair root in place. Shaving is fine. Arrive with clean skin, no makeup on the treatment area, and tell your provider about any medications, recent sun exposure or self-tanner.

Afterward, mild redness and swelling are normal. The AAD says common side effects such as discomfort, swelling and redness last 1 to 3 days. Treated hairs do not fall out right away; the ASPS notes they can take days to weeks to shed, which can look like regrowth at first. Protect the area from the sun and use sunscreen, and avoid tanning between sessions.

Rarer side effects include blistering, cold sores, infection, scarring and changes in skin color. Choosing an experienced, medically supervised provider is the best way to lower those risks.

Frequently asked questions

Is facial laser hair removal permanent?

The FDA-cleared claim is permanent hair reduction, a long-term, stable reduction in regrowth measured up to 12 months after a full course. Many patients need occasional maintenance, especially for hormonal facial hair. Results vary.

Does laser hair removal on the face hurt?

Most people describe a quick snapping or warm sensation. The upper lip tends to feel the most sensitive, but sessions on small areas are short, and cooling helps.

Can laser remove peach fuzz?

Usually not well. Fine, light vellus hair has little pigment for the laser to target. Coarser, darker strands respond much better.

Can laser make facial hair grow back thicker?

It is uncommon, but paradoxical hypertrichosis, extra hair growth triggered by treatment, has been reported, and the Endocrine Society notes a higher risk in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern women with facial hirsutism. Your provider should discuss it with you before starting.

How soon can I wear makeup after treatment?

Many providers suggest waiting until any redness settles, often the next day. Follow the aftercare instructions your provider gives you for your skin.

How long until I see results?

Treated hairs shed over days to weeks after each session, and most people notice clearly less regrowth after a few sessions. The full result builds over the whole course.
