Jeuveau vs Botox: How the Two Neurotoxins Compare

Jeuveau and Botox share the same 20-unit label dose for frown lines. Here is how they differ in FDA approvals, duration, price and who each may suit.
Botox injections

Jeuveau vs Botox is a close match: both are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A injections that soften frown lines at the same 20-unit label dose. The main differences are that Botox Cosmetic is approved for more treatment areas and has a much longer track record, while Jeuveau is a newer option focused on aesthetics that is often priced lower per unit.

The essentials

  • Same dose for frown lines. Both FDA labels set 20 units across five injection sites for glabellar lines.
  • Different approvals. Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is FDA-approved for frown lines only. Botox Cosmetic is approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines and platysma bands.
  • Similar molecule size. Jeuveau’s label describes it as a 900 kDa botulinum toxin type A, the same complex size as Botox.
  • Units are not interchangeable. Both labels say so, even though the frown-line dose is the same number.
  • Price. At Esthetica Medspa, wrinkle relaxers including Jeuveau start at $9 per unit with no minimums on our current promotions.

What is the difference between Jeuveau and Botox?

Jeuveau and Botox are both botulinum toxin type A injections that relax the muscles that create expression lines. The key differences are regulatory and practical: Botox Cosmetic has four approved cosmetic indications, Jeuveau has one, and the two come from different manufacturers with their own formulation and potency testing.

Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is made by Allergan Aesthetics. Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is made by Evolus and received FDA approval in 2019 for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines, the vertical “11s” between the brows, according to its prescribing information. Because Jeuveau is approved only for aesthetic use, it is often described as a cosmetic-focused neurotoxin.

Is Jeuveau as effective as Botox?

For frown lines, Jeuveau is FDA-approved on the strength of its own clinical trials, and it is used at the same 20-unit label dose as Botox Cosmetic. Most patients can expect a comparable softening of the 11s with either product when it is dosed and placed well. There is no single answer to which works “better,” because individual response varies.

What separates them is breadth of evidence and approvals. Botox Cosmetic has been studied across more areas and over far more years, and it carries FDA approval for crow’s feet, forehead lines and platysma bands. Jeuveau can be used in other areas off-label by trained injectors, which is legal and common, but it is not the same as an on-label indication. If on-label treatment matters to you for a specific area, ask your provider.

How quickly does Jeuveau work compared with Botox?

Both typically start working within a few days. The ASPS says botulinum toxin results can appear within a few days, with the full effect taking up to a week. Any difference in onset between Jeuveau and Botox is small and varies from person to person.

Some patients feel one product “kicks in” faster for them, which is worth noting in your treatment history. For an event, book your appointment at least two weeks ahead with either product, so the result has settled and there is time for a touch-up if needed.

Which lasts longer, Jeuveau or Botox?

Expect a similar timeline, roughly three to four months for most people. The ASPS puts botulinum toxin results at about three to four months. Jeuveau’s label does not state a duration, but it says retreatment should be no more frequent than every three months.

Your own factors usually matter more than the brand: muscle strength, dose, the area treated and how expressive you are. Our guide on how long Botox lasts covers what tends to shorten or extend results, and most of it applies to Jeuveau too.

Is Jeuveau cheaper than Botox?

Jeuveau is often priced lower per unit than Botox, and because the frown-line dose is the same 20 units on both labels, a lower unit price can mean a lower total for that area. Pricing still varies by practice and by how many units your face needs, so compare the total for your treatment plan.

At Esthetica Medspa, our current promotions list wrinkle relaxers starting at $9 per unit with no minimums, covering Jeuveau, Letybo and other premium neurotoxins. We confirm the exact product, unit count and total at your consultation. For more on how neurotoxin pricing works, see our Botox cost guide.

How does Jeuveau compare with Dysport?

Jeuveau and Dysport are both FDA-approved for frown lines, but they are dosed on different scales. Jeuveau’s label dose for frown lines is 20 units, while Dysport’s is 50 units, so their unit counts and per-unit prices cannot be compared directly. As with Botox, the units are not interchangeable.

If you are weighing several neurotoxins at once, our guide to Botox and other wrinkle relaxers compares the main options in one place. If Letybo is on your list, our Letybo vs Botox comparison covers that pairing.

Who might choose Jeuveau, and who might choose Botox?

Many healthy adults with moderate to severe frown lines are candidates for either. The right choice depends on the area you want treated, your budget, your past response and your injector’s experience with each product.

  • Jeuveau may suit you if your main concern is the 11s, you want a cost-conscious option, or you are curious to compare how a different toxin feels for you.
  • Botox may suit you if you want on-label treatment across several areas, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines or neck bands, or you have had consistently good results with it.
  • Either may not suit you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions, are allergic to any ingredient or have an infection at the injection site.

Tell your provider about all medications and supplements, including blood thinners, and any previous neurotoxin treatment and how you responded.

Are the side effects of Jeuveau and Botox the same?

The common side effects are similar, including injection-site discomfort, headache and, less often, a temporary drooping of the eyelid or brow. Both FDA labels carry the same boxed warning that the toxin’s effect may spread beyond the injection area, causing symptoms such as swallowing or breathing difficulty, which can be life threatening.

Those serious reactions are rare at cosmetic doses, but they are why neurotoxins should be given only by trained providers under medical oversight. Seek medical care right away if you notice trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after any treatment.

What happens at a Jeuveau or Botox appointment?

The appointment is the same for both products and usually takes less than 30 minutes. Your provider reviews your health history, asks you to frown, raise your brows and smile so they can map the muscles, then cleans the skin and places a few small injections with a fine needle. Most people describe it as a quick pinch.

Afterward, you can usually return to normal activities right away. Common aftercare advice includes not rubbing or massaging the treated area for the rest of the day and holding off on strenuous exercise until the next day; your provider will give you instructions for your treatment. Small bumps at the injection points usually settle within minutes to hours. We often suggest a follow-up about two weeks later, once the result has settled, so we can check symmetry and adjust if needed. Keeping a note of the product, units and how long your result lasts makes it much easier to fine-tune your next visit, whichever toxin you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jeuveau the same as Botox?

No. Both are botulinum toxin type A and work the same way, but they are different products from different manufacturers. Botox Cosmetic has four approved cosmetic areas; Jeuveau is approved for frown lines.

Can I switch from Botox to Jeuveau?

Yes, many patients do. Wait until your current treatment has worn off, then tell your provider how your last treatment went so they can plan the dose. Units are not interchangeable, even when the frown-line dose matches.

Can Jeuveau be used on crow’s feet or the forehead?

Injectors can use Jeuveau in those areas off-label, which is legal and common, but its FDA approval covers frown lines only. Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for crow’s feet and forehead lines. Ask your provider which product they recommend for each area and why.

How many units of Jeuveau do I need for the 11s?

The FDA label dose for frown lines is 20 units, given as 4 units at each of five sites. Your provider may adjust based on your muscle strength and goals.

How long does Jeuveau last?

Jeuveau’s label does not state a duration. Botulinum toxin results typically last about three to four months, according to the ASPS, and retreatment should be no more often than every three months.

Does Esthetica Medspa offer Jeuveau?

Yes, Jeuveau is part of our neurotoxin menu, alongside Botox and Letybo. Ask when you book to confirm availability at your location.
