Ask for the license, not the job title. In a med spa, injectables are typically performed by a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician, working under a medical director. “Aesthetic specialist” describes what someone does, not what they are licensed to do.

If you have a diagnosed skin condition, unexplained lesions, a history of keloid scarring, or a pigmentation disorder, start with a board-certified dermatologist. For microneedling in particular, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a medical doctor with skin expertise and notes that in untrained hands the risks include infection, scarring and long-lasting discoloration. A clinic that tells you this before selling you something is behaving correctly.

A consultation should be an assessment. The provider looks at your skin in good light, takes a medical history including medications and supplements, explains what the treatment can and cannot do for your anatomy, and is willing to tell you that you are not a candidate.
