Brazilian laser hair removal removes hair from the entire bikini area — front, sides and the strip between — using a medical-grade laser that targets the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. Over six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, most patients see 70 to 90 percent hair reduction in the area. This guide explains what a Brazilian session actually looks like at our clinic, the comfort options we offer, what aftercare matters and how we handle privacy and skin tone considerations.
What is Brazilian laser hair removal?
“Brazilian” describes the area treated, not the technique. A full Brazilian removes hair from the front pubic area, the labia, the perineum and the strip between the buttocks. Patients can also choose to leave a “landing strip” or triangle of hair at the top — that is a personal preference we discuss at the consultation. A “bikini” treatment is more conservative: only the area visible outside a standard bikini line, with everything below the underwear left untreated.
The most common decision we see is starting with bikini and graduating to full Brazilian by session two or three, once you know what the sensation feels like.
Why patients choose laser over waxing, IPL or shaving
- Less frequent maintenance. After the initial series, most patients only need one or two touch-up sessions per year — compared with every three to four weeks for waxing or weekly for shaving.
- Fewer ingrowns. The most common reason patients come in for Brazilian laser is to escape the constant cycle of ingrown hairs and razor bumps.
- Less skin irritation. No depilatory cream burns, no nicks, no constant waxing inflammation.
- Hair grows back finer. Hairs that survive the series tend to be lighter and thinner.
- Cost-effective over time. The lifetime cost of a Brazilian laser series is lower than years of waxing.
How the laser actually destroys the follicle
Understanding the mechanism helps explain why protocol matters so much. Medical-grade hair removal lasers operate on a principle called selective photothermolysis, first described in the 1980s by Drs. Anderson and Parrish. The laser emits a wavelength of light that is preferentially absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft. When the energy hits a pigmented follicle, it converts to heat. That heat travels down the hair shaft to the bulb and the bulge — the two structures responsible for hair regeneration. When the bulb and bulge are heated above approximately 70°C, the regenerative stem cells are damaged enough to stop producing new hair.
Three parameters control the outcome: wavelength (which determines how deep the energy goes and how selective it is for hair melanin vs skin melanin), pulse duration (the time the energy is delivered), and fluence (how much energy per square centimeter). On the bikini area, we tune all three for the patient’s Fitzpatrick type and the hair density of the specific zone. Cooling between pulses keeps the surrounding skin at safe temperatures.
The laser only damages follicles that are in the active growth phase (anagen) at the moment of treatment. At any given time only a fraction of follicles in a given area are in anagen, which is why the protocol stages sessions four to six weeks apart — to catch different cycles as they enter active growth.
Comparing the laser platforms we use
Esthetica Medspa runs two medical-grade laser platforms on Brazilian work, and we choose based on Fitzpatrick type and hair characteristics:
- Diode 800–810 nm — Our default for Fitzpatrick I–IV. Good penetration, fast pulse repetition, and well tolerated with contact cooling. Best for medium-density coarse hair on lighter skin.
- Nd:YAG 1064 nm — Our exclusive choice for Fitzpatrick V–VI. Deeper penetration, much lower epidermal absorption. We also use Nd:YAG selectively for Fitzpatrick IV when there is residual tan or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Two platforms we do not use for Brazilian on this skin range: Alexandrite 755 nm (too aggressive on V–VI) and home IPL (not a laser, lacks the selectivity and energy density needed for permanent reduction).
How sessions work — start to finish
A Brazilian laser session takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Here is what to expect:
- Pre-session prep at home (24 hours before). Shave the area cleanly. Do not wax, epilate or use depilatory creams for at least four weeks before — the laser targets the follicle, and waxing removes it temporarily.
- Arrival. You’ll change into a robe in a private treatment room. We discuss the area to treat and confirm your preferences.
- Cleansing and marking. We clean the area with an alcohol-free cleanser and mark the treatment grid.
- Topical numbing (optional). Available for an extra fee. Most patients tolerate the area without it after session one.
- Laser passes. Each square inch receives two passes. We use a chilled tip on contact for comfort.
- Aloe and SPF. Cooling aloe gel afterward. SPF if you’ll be exposed to sun the same day.
The total appointment, including check-in, runs 45 to 60 minutes.
What does it feel like?
Most patients describe Brazilian laser hair removal as more uncomfortable than underarms but less than legs because the skin in the bikini area is more sensitive. The sensation is a quick warm snap, eased significantly by the contact cooling on our handpieces. Each pass is over in seconds. Session one is the most uncomfortable; by session three or four the area is noticeably less reactive because hair density has dropped.
Comfort options at Esthetica include topical numbing (applied 20–30 minutes before), pre-procedure ibuprofen and a slower paced session. We don’t push anyone through a session faster than they want.
A typical six-month Brazilian timeline
To set expectations, here is what a full series looks like across six months:
- Session 1 (week 0): Consultation, patch test results review, first full treatment. Expected discomfort: highest of the series. Visible shedding starts 10–14 days later.
- Session 2 (week 5): Hair density noticeably lower; many follicles already destroyed by session one. Sensation: easier.
- Session 3 (week 10): Patchy regrowth, with finer, lighter hair in the previously dense zones. Most patients report a clear difference from baseline.
- Session 4 (week 16): Continued thinning. Roughly 50–70 percent reduction.
- Session 5 (week 22): Sparse regrowth. The remaining hair is the harder cohort — finer, less pigmented, sometimes hormonal.
- Sessions 6–8 (months 6–9): Final passes to catch follicles that cycled later. End-of-series result: 70–90 percent permanent reduction.
After the series, most patients return once or twice per year for maintenance touch-ups.
Day-by-day aftercare
Aftercare is what determines results. The protocol below is what we ask Brazilian patients to follow:
| Window | Do | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| 0–24 hours | Cool compresses; loose cotton underwear; aloe gel | Hot showers, saunas, steam, swimming pools, intercourse |
| 24–72 hours | Gentle non-fragranced cleanser; sunscreen if exposed | Sweaty workouts, tight synthetic underwear, exfoliation |
| Day 4–14 | Resume normal activity; expect hair shedding | Sun exposure to the area, self-tanner, scrubs |
| 14–30 days | Light exfoliation can resume to prevent ingrowns | Wax, epilate or tweeze — only shave between sessions |
If the treated area looks red beyond 48 hours or feels truly painful (not warm), call us. It happens rarely, but we want to know.

Is Brazilian laser hair removal for me? Skin tone notes
Brazilian laser hair removal is safe across Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI with the right laser. We use:
- Diode for lighter skin (Fitzpatrick I–IV) — well established, fast.
- Nd:YAG 1064 nm for darker skin (Fitzpatrick V–VI) — deeper penetration, lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Our laser hair removal for dark skin overview goes into more detail.
The one factor that can affect candidacy is hair color. Laser targets melanin, so very fair, white, gray or red hair responds poorly. If most of your hair in the area is dark or medium brown, you are a good candidate.
Common questions about privacy and comfort
Brazilian laser hair removal is a routine procedure for our team, but we know it’s not routine for most patients. We provide a private treatment room, female providers on request (and as the default at most of our clinics for Brazilian work), and a robe or modesty covering throughout. You decide what gets treated and what doesn’t, every visit. If you’d like to stop or pause mid-session, you can.

Special situations
Pregnancy
We do not perform laser hair removal during pregnancy. We resume after the post-partum period.
Menstruation
It’s safe to be treated during your period; many patients prefer to schedule outside it for comfort. A tampon is fine.
Sensitivity right before a period
Some patients find the bikini area more sensitive in the week before menstruation. If that is you, schedule mid-cycle.
PCOS or hormone-driven hair growth
You can absolutely be treated. Plan for more sessions and an annual maintenance schedule because hormone-driven hair regenerates more aggressively.
Frequently asked questions
How many Brazilian sessions do I need?
Six to eight sessions for most patients, spaced four to six weeks apart. Hormone-driven patients (PCOS, perimenopause) often add two to three more.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — and you should. The laser targets the follicle under the skin, so the surface hair must be shaved 12 to 24 hours before each session.
Is it safe to swim after?
Wait 48 hours. Chlorine, salt water and hot tubs can irritate freshly treated skin.
What if I have ingrowns when I come in?
That is one of the main reasons patients choose laser. Active ingrowns often clear after sessions three to four because there is less hair to ingrow.
Do I have to be completely bare?
No. We tailor the shape to your preference at each session — landing strip, triangle, hourglass — whatever you want.
How long is recovery?
Most patients return to normal activity immediately. Swimming, saunas and intercourse: wait 24–48 hours.
Can men get Brazilian laser hair removal?
Yes. The area treated and the prep are different; we discuss specifics during the consultation.
Will the hair come back?
Some follicles can reactivate over years. Most patients book one to two maintenance sessions per year after the initial series.
